A twist of root spice and wet stone on the dry finish brings everything to a point. This is just starting to relax and will offer delicious complexity over the next few years." "Axehouse vineyard lies in the Omaka Valley. While the area is renowned for its pinot noir and coastalinfluenced aromatics, grüner veltliner remains a rarity here, with these vines among the oldest plantings of the variety in the country. An immediately attractive wine, it opens with blossoming frangipani, lemon cream and white nectarine, the aromatics bright and inviting. The palate confirms its grüner veltliner identity, shaped by distinctive notes of radish and galangal root. Fleshy greengage plum and fine white tea tannins add texture and poise. This is a clear expression of Marlborough’s climate, paying homage to the variety’s Austrian origins while offering a more generous, approachable style. It will reward richly at the table, especially alongside artichokes, leeks, onion and other savoury vegetable dishes." (James Halliday, 93/100)

Prima Donna is part of our reserve series which we only make in exceptional years, provided it does not compromise the quality of our estate wines. It is a selection from the best barrels, coming from some of the oldest ungrafted plantings in the vineyard, characterised by small berries and loose open bunches. As with all our Pinot’s, we use traditional Burgundian winemaking methods. Approxinately 40% of the grapes were put at the bottom of the fermentation vats as whole bunches, with the balance being destemmed on top, retaining as many whole berries as possible. The vats were kept cool over the next few days to help extract the soft, silky tannins from the pinot noir skins. After approx a week, the must gently started to ferment naturally. During fermentation the skins of the grapes we plunged twice daily. When the fermentation finished, the grape remnants were left to steep help extract a different range of tannins that add structure in the wine for up to a week to hand depth. The exact duration of this period was determined by daily tasting. Subsequently the wine was gently pressed off and put into oak barriques (approx 40% new) from selected artisan Burgundian coopers. In the summer after harvest, when the weather warmed, the wine underwent a natural malo-lactic (secondary) fermentation. After maturing for 14 months, a selection from the best barriques was chosen and carefully blended, to produce the most complex and balanced wine possible.

Verdelho is een bijzondere en vrij zeldzame druif, die vooral is aangeplant op Madeira en de Azoren en die eind 19e eeuw zijn weg vond naar Australië. Daar heeft men er in de Hunter Valley een lokale specialiteit van gemaakt met Tyrrell's als voornaamste pleitbezorger. Hun Fordwich Verdelho heeft een heerlijke neus van limoen, rijpe ananas, witte bloesem en subtiele kruiden, terwijl de smaak gul en sappig is, met een licht exotische fruitexpressie, frisse, levendige zuren en een pittige afdronk. Geweldige prijs / kwaliteit!

"Now all home Rayner vineyard fruit, with grenache (90%) off vines planted in 1970, with some from ’19 and ’17. The other 10% is an even split of cinsault and mataro, with the latter seeing older oak. This is as good as any rosé from this address, and that’s saying a lot, with the bar set so high. Rose gold leaning into onion skin in appearance, with notes of redcurrant, wild cherry, orange peel, pink grapefruit, watermelon and musk. No confection here. No estery blur – just exceptional fruit and a masterfully refined blend. It’s properly dry, expansive though supremely elegant, long through the palate, slightly chalky, pithy, vibrant. Bright & flinty oyster shell nose with grapefruits, pears & lemongrass. A hint of vanillan oak bringing a sweet perfume. Finesse combine with pillowy fruit weight, this is a wine that is fine boned with citrus flavours dominating in its youth. A citrus energy drives the palate with a pithy interest and texture on the back palate. An extremely fine grained oak tannin framework lingers on the finish. Reviews 2017: The Winefront 94/100, Jeremy Oliver 95/100, Reviews 2018: 2 Merit Wine - The Real Review Wine Classification of Australia, 96/100 James Halliday Wine Companion. Winemaking: Hand harvested grapes placed in a blast chiller overnight before whole bunch pressing. This gives us very high quality juice, 24 hours settling before transferred to French oak barrels; some 228 L barriques and some 500L puncheons, 30% new oak. Both wild yeasts and cultured yeast were allowed to carry out the fermentation offering complexity and a hint of struck match. Natural acidity was retained by inhibiting malolactic fermentation. Maturation for 10 months in our cool underground cellar before blending and bottling. Vines:The two original Chardonnay blocks, planted in 1969 dominate the blend. Relatively new Chardonnay clones 95 and 548 are impressive enough to add to the blend. Cellaring: Will reward careful cellaring for up to 10 years. To drink: 2025 -2029
